Dread closed the door and walked to The Demon, which was parked outside of Fallon’s apartment, sitting on the kickstand; and Flavio looked in all directions before joining him next to it.

When he glanced back at the house, Fallon was staring at them through the glass in the door, but then she walked away and turned off the lights.

Flavio cursed and shook his head. “This is some bullshit,” he muttered, flexing his neck. “This is the exactly what I said was gonna happen!”

“I hate saying you were right,” Dread said. “That’s why you never hear me say it: but…” He scoffed and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.

Flavio watched him light one and stick it between his tight lips.

“I woulda’ thought Ecuador would have been enough for Fallon, but she’s still pushing the envelope,” Dread said.

“I ain’t never met a bitch like her!”

Dread’s top lip curled hearing the reference. “Watch your fucking mouth, Flav,” he warned him for the second time, but Flavio only sucked his teeth.

Dread exhaled. “We need to tell Rey about this. He needs to be in the loop. I told Fallon she had nothing to worry about, but that was a damn lie, if there ever was one. And you know how she is,” Dread continued to whine. “She starts looking into that and the next thing you know, she’s looking into something else. We need to keep her away from Slim or it could be trouble for Rey.” He shook his head and shuddered.

“What the fuck happened with the connect in the Police Department?” Flavio asked him. “I thought you paid to have those files locked off.”

“I thought so too,” Dread said, and he shook his head. “Looks like another motherfucker needs to die.” He lowered his voice. “And what the hell happened with Roccio?”

“Some shit about a phone call and some money,” Flavio said through a grunt.

“Rey’s money?”

“Nah.” Flavio shook his head. “Seems like someone paid him to set Slim up. All these motherfuckers are greedy, Dread. One goddamn stack ain’t enough for ‘em. Everybody wants more.”

“Money and power: the root of all evil.” Dread took a draw from his cigarette.

“Roccio didn’t get to say much because I ended him soon after he opened his mouth.”

“How’d you kill him?”

Flavio rolled his eyes towards the stars. This was the part of the conversation he’d actually been dreading. “I poked him,” he bit out, “with an icepick in the chest - small wound, no blood.”

Dread’s grin was so wide, it almost fell off his face. “So, you used one of my techniques? Motherfucker…”

“It’s not your technique, Dread. They do that shit in the movies!”

Dread shook his head. “That shit belongs to me, homie.” His chest pushed out and he puffed on his cigarette.

Flavio sucked his teeth again and sliced his hand through his hair. “The point is, it all lines up with what Fallon was saying,” he said. “Someone is pulling at threads yanking, waiting to see which one will make the bottom fall out. Thing is, there are only so many threads in the fucking tapestry.
